Dear Sioux Empire United Way Supporter,

Did you know that 22% of Americans have only minimal literacy skills? That's why your gift to Sioux Empire United Way provides literacy instruction through the Sioux Falls Area Literacy Council.

Last year, 1,004 tutor hours were used to help 62 different individuals increase their literacy skills. Maaza was among those assisted. “I want to help my children with their homework, I want to give them a better life. Knowledge gives me confidence.”

Learn more about Maaza's story here. You can also learn more about how your gift is making a difference through the Literacy Council and other disabilities programs here.

Staying Active

In honor of Anti-Boredom Month, here are some fast facts about the importance of staying active:

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in South Dakota. Just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each day can put a person at a lower risk for heart disease and stroke. Locally, approximately 32% of students are overweight or obese.

Your gift to Sioux Empire United Way is providing youth, adults and families a way to beat the boredom blues and stay active.

Last year:

  • 835 low-income adults and families were provided with wellness activities through the Sioux Falls Family YMCA
  • 763 individuals took part in swimming lessons through the YWCA Sioux Falls
  • 2,753 school-aged students received instruction and participated in an organized basketball program at the YMCA
  • 478 girls, ages 8-11, took part in Girls on the Run, a character development and empowerment program through YWCA.
