Uniting for Students’ Success

Sioux Empire United Way has some “pretty awesome” news about an exciting additional component to USucceed. This week, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Center announced a new scholarship fund to benefit future USucceed graduates.

The Avera McKennan Sister Sheila Schnell Scholarship Endowment at University Center has been developed specifically to provide opportunities to area students who graduate from high school after completing the USucceed program.

In addition to the scholarship opportunity, plans are under way to create a higher education resource network called USucceed University. Beginning in their first year of participation in USucceed, students and mentors will have access to information and educational workshops on navigating the world of post-secondary education. All post-secondary schools in the Sioux Empire have been invited to participate.

Did You Know? One-third of South Dakota third-graders have untreated dental decay. Six percent of those children need urgent dental care because of pain or infection. Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program, a partner of the Sioux Empire United Way, provides restorative and preventive dental care to underserved children. Last year, 280 local youth were served. For 75 percent of those ages 13 and older, it was their first dental visit.
